Art Club will change to Tuesdays ONLY after the holiday break. Several students expressed interest in the club but could not attend on their specified day, therefore, we will combine all grades and meet on Tuesdays until May.
All students currently enrolled in Art Club may continue to attend. :)

5th Grade Family Portraits
Before Fall Break, our 5th graders spent some time thinking about their family. What is a family? Who is part of their family and what do they like to do? We looked at the writer and illustrator Eric Carle's collage process and mimicked it by painting our own tissue paper and using it, mixed with plain tissue paper, to add color to their family portraits. Here are a few to check out!
Help Needed!
Next week, we are hoping to begin a really neat project for 7th and 8th grade but we need some help! We are using “found objects” so anything that is made of cardboard, metal (light metal, think aluminum), wood, and paper is usable. Some ideas are listed below.
Also, SHOE BOXES or boxes of a similar size. The more the better of any of this stuff. Curious what we’re doing? Below is the artist who is inspiring our sculptures.

Many interested parties have asked what we need for Art Club. After some brainstorming, I compiled a list of potential projects and associated materials. If you feel a child who is attending and want to donate a material or materials from this list please do! Or if you feel like donating at all :). We take almost anything!

Still Life Oil Pastels
7th and 8th grade took their contour drawing to the next level by adding color. Color is a difficult theory to master so we started by experimenting and then added color schemes as needed.
To begin, our students sketched several glass objects from life using a contour line. After they completed their final drawing, they began adding the first layer of oil pastel following the simple rule of "a light color ONLY." Oil pastels, like many paints, work best when combining them from light to dark and this is what we did.
After layer one, each student added layer two and made choices on their own when choosing colors (experimenting with colors to see what colors combined to create what).
For the third layer, they learned about complementary colors, shading, and highlighting in order to give the illusion of a light source and form. We focused on the marks in the oil and blending.
The last two steps included adding a pattern to the background or table and outlining the objects in black.
As you can see, our students did a wonderful job!

Landscapes in Progress
Our 5th and 6th graders and Independent Studiers are hard at work creating oil pastel landscapes. Here are a couple almost-finished products.
To begin, each student had to draw a basic landscape and then proceed to color in each section with three layers of oil pastel. It sounds easy, but managing color combinations and coloring as thickly as necessary takes skill. As you can see, our students are doing fabulously!

Usually 5th/6th grade will meet on Mondays from 4-5:00 but next week, due to Labor Day, they will meet on Tuesday. 7th/8th grade will meet on Wednesday as normal, 4-5:00.

Art Club Sign Ups
Hi all,
To sign up for Art Club (a commitment of one 9 weeks) you may email me at l.lancaster@mnps.org or send a note with your child to school. Please include your child's grade level so I know which group to sign them up with. The limit per group is 25 students, I will let you know if either group reaches capacity. If that happens before your child gets signed up, I will make a note to place them at the top of the next 9 weeks session.

Announcing! Art Club!
What is Art Club? It is a chance to experiment with a variety of mediums and to expand your creativity! Each week we will use a different medium and you will have the chance to create with a little help and guidance from me :). I hope to see you there!
Art Club is set to begin the week after Labor Day, September 6-9, 2011.
Details:
- 25 Students limited per group. Watch for information on sign-ups next week.
- Mondays: 5th/6th Grade, 4:00-5:00
- Wednesday: 7th/8th Grade: 4:00-5:00
Parents:
I apologize if splitting age groups is complicated for families that have students in mixed grades. If you want to meet with me to discuss a special circumstance feel free to and we can try to work something out.
Each 9 weeks we will open the sign up again to give students who missed the boat this 9 weeks a chance. If all the spaces aren't filled than repeating students may sign up. Hopefully, everyone will get a chance!
